We already know what he can do on a basketball court. J.R. Giddens has spent the last few months showing NBA scouts his very talented skill set. It should all payoff during Thursday’s NBA draft. Giddens is projected by some to be a late first round or early second round draft pick. In a conversation with Giddens Sunday, he told me he trying not to think too much of the draft. He said all he could do was worry about the things he can control…like his health. Giddens will make it to Albuquerque just in time to watch the draft. His week is full of workouts. He performed for the New Jersey Nets Monday. Today it was off to Detroit. He will wrap up with a trip to the world champions of basketball Boston Celtics. Hopefully Giddens will here his name early. He is a player that is deserving. He came to UNM with baggage and quickly lost his teammates along the way. Instead of continuing the bad run, Giddens did an about face. He matured. He became a leader. He gave Lobo fans a reason to come to the games. Giddens made Lobo basketball fun again just like Danny Granger before him. His total unselfish play and 100 percent effort sent fans in the Pit home happy. All of this is not lost on Giddens. During our conversation he made it very clear that he considers Albuquerque home and that this stop in the desert has made him the man he will be when he enters the NBA. He came to the Duke city a child. There is no doubt J.R. Giddens is now a man. Let’s hope that an NBA team makes him their man. Let’s hope it’s early as possible on Thursday night. Once again, Giddens deserves it.
