Women’s city golf championship needs a makeover

It was three rounds of golf without anyone breaking par.  Despite that the winner, Morgan Grantham, beat the field by a whopping 19 strokes.  Grantham’s former lobo teammate, Alexandra Phelps, won by 23 strokes the previous year but, that was before the course was extended.  Maybe the extension of the course was a bad idea for 2008.  I consider myself the worst golfer in the history of the sport but, I may have finished in the middle of the pack in this tournament.  Grantham provided all of the highlights in a field of players that appeared to be playing a practice round for three days.  Maybe the solution is to shorthen the course and change the date.  If the tournament was played on a different day maybe they could have landed last year’s champ Alexandra Phelps and former Sandia and current University of Denver player Katie Kempter.  Both were busy at the U.S. Amateur qualifier.  The men’s city golf tournament is loaded with former and current Lobos, Aggies and Mustangs.  The women’s city golf tournament needs to make it fashionable to play.  If they haven’t already, the women’s city golf tournament organizers should go after former champs like January Romero and others.  A field of past champions no matter how small would add some intrigue to the tournament.  The galleries would grow and the interest would make the field swell.  Competition is a good thing that has abandoned the women’s city golf tournament.  It’s time to bring it back.

Holly…she’s a star

Holly Holm spent part of her Thursday looking for a dress.  The world boxing champion didn’t want any kind of dress but, something classy enough for the big time.  Holm is ready for her close-up.  She has been nominated for an ESPN Espy award.  Holm is the only female in the category of best fighter.  Her competition for the nomination includes fighters known all over the world including Floyd Mayweather Jr..  Holm says she will just be honored to share the same room with so many awesome athletes when the Espys kick off July 20th in Los Angeles.  She says she feels like she doesn’t deserve the recognition.  When you look at her body of work, you have to say not only does Holm deserve it.  It’s about time she got a big shot of national attention.  Holm has mowed down all of the big names of women’s boxing.  She has humbly punched her way to the top.  The best thing about it is that Holm continues to live in the present.  She is careful to look around and enjoy every minute of what is happening now.  So many people are always racing to the next thing.  Holm says she likes to take her time and enjoy every minute of what is going on at the present moment.  It sounds like she really knows how to appreciate something.  Holm will be up against stiff competition at the Espys but then again she always is up against stiff competition.  This time she needs our help to come out on top.  You can vote for Holly at espn.com or go to krqe.com and click on “as seen on krqe.”

Sports and July 4th

The 4th of July is fast approaching.  Our nation will celebrate Independence and break bread.  That means there will be sports to watch and food to grill.  Hot dogs get plenty of play on July 4th.  There is the national hot dog eating contest leading the way.  The event sponsored by Nathans has become a must watch.  I watched because I cannot believe anyone can eat more than one hot dog.  Forget about eating it fast.  Personally, I have a horrible relationship with hot dogs.  If you are serving hot dogs, wrap me up like the mummy because I will become a human oil can after ingesting just one.  Hot dogs bring out the worst in me in every way you can think.  There is something in a hot dog that takes my digestive track on a roller coaster ride that would rival all of the coasters at Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio.  While it has carved it’s own niche on the sports scene, the consumption of hot dogs is reserved for only a few.  You know who you are….the fraternity of metal tummies.  Whether watching or eating, I just can’t seem to stomach the tubular mystery meat we call hot dogs.

Time to Shine J.R. Giddens

We already know what he can do on a basketball court.  J.R. Giddens has spent the last few months showing NBA scouts his very talented skill set.  It should all payoff during Thursday’s NBA draft.  Giddens is projected by some to be a late first round or early second round draft pick.  In a conversation with Giddens Sunday, he told me he trying not to think too much of the draft.  He said all he could do was worry about the things he can control…like his health.  Giddens will make it to Albuquerque just in time to watch the draft.  His week is full of workouts.  He performed for the New Jersey Nets Monday.  Today it was off to Detroit.  He will wrap up with a trip to the world champions of basketball Boston Celtics.  Hopefully Giddens will here his name early.  He is a player that is deserving.  He came to UNM with baggage and quickly lost his teammates along the way.  Instead of continuing the bad run, Giddens did an about face.  He matured.  He became a leader.  He gave Lobo fans a reason to come to the games.  Giddens made Lobo basketball fun again just like Danny Granger before him.  His total unselfish play and 100 percent effort sent fans in the Pit home happy.  All of this is not lost on Giddens.  During our conversation he made it very clear that he considers Albuquerque home and that this stop in the desert has made him the man he will be when he enters the NBA.  He came to the Duke city a child.  There is no doubt J.R. Giddens is now a man.  Let’s hope that an NBA team makes him their man.  Let’s hope it’s early as possible on Thursday night.  Once again, Giddens deserves it.

Tapia’s last stand

Maybe it’s time for five time world champion Johnny Tapia to move to the next phase of his career.  Tapia would be an awesome trainer.  His knowledge of the fight game is second to none.  Young boxing hopefuls would flock to his gym.  Some would do it to get instruction from a boxer who has never back down.  Some would go because they would be starstruck.  That would give the Tapia’s a steady income and Johnny a graceful exit from the ring.  At this point in his life it might be the only choice.  The 41 year old Tapia saw his last fight card cancelled over a contract dispute.  The word contract dispute in boxing is similar to the word poison.  Maybe there is a promoter out there willing to give Tapia another shot in the ring.  Maybe not.  Promoter Ron Weathers believes he was burned by the Tapia’s on the cancelled fight card in early May.  An attorney representing the Tapia’s said there was never a contract.  Weathers said there was a contract.  Contract or not this latest twist in the boxing career of Johnny Tapia could be the knockout punch that he did not see coming.  Shortly after the boxing fiasco in El Paso, Texas Sports Illustrated wrote a piece on the Tapia’s.  It was not flatttering.   It’s time for Johnny to get in the gym and train the next generation of champions.  His name recognition is still good enough to get a full gym.  His mind is still sharp enough to give the kids his best.  Too much time in the ring could change all of that and equal zero skills…zero brain function.  That would be a tragedy.

NCAA Hoops and more sports

Many brackets have been busted as the NCAA men’s and women’s tournaments continue.  It looks like North Carolina could be on their way to a championship among the men.  The women’s side seem more open with Tennessee and Connecticutt sure to have a say in the end.  Baseball has started for the majors.  The Isotopes will be ready to go soon.  The team returns to Albuquerque Sunday and will hold a media day Monday.  Johnny Tapia’s April 11th fight in Las Cruces has a new date and location.  Tapia’s promoter, Ron Weathers, says Tapia will not fight at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces as planned but in El Paso,Texas.  Weathers is hoping to hold the fight at either the Don Haskins center or the El Paso Coliseum.

Weathers says the date will no longer be April 11th.  He is hoping to have Tapia in the ring the last week in April.  An opponent has not been named.  Weathers is looking at three different fighters as possibilities.

More Tournament talk

The Lobo men’s basketball team went one and done in the NIT tournament but not without a fight.  A close road loss at California bodes well for the future.  It seems like the Lobos have become a tough road team.  It will be interesting to see how they will do with the ninth best recruiting class in the country coming in for the next season.  The young guns will need time to mature.  It may take a year or two to see them at their best.  With the infusion of big name coaches, the Mountain West may be ready to move up on the men’s side.  The basketball already seems like a new brand is slowly working it’s way in.  This year’s play was more physical than past years.  The women of Mountain West basketball continue to represent well.  Three teams made it to the NCAA tournament this year with Utah, Wyoming and the Lobos.  It will be interesting to see how they finish.  The Lobos and Wyoming will play in front of the pit crowd today.  The Lobos will definitely benefit from the rabid and very supportive Lobo fans.  Wyoming will benefit also when they are not playing the Lobos.  The Cowgirls couldn’t have received a better spot.  Like Utah two seasons ago, they will feel the power of the Pit.

The Lobos face a stiff challenge against West Virginia.  The Lobos have won six straight games and are playing at home.  The Lady Mountaineers are also facing a stiff challenge.  What about the NCAA men’s tournament.  Everything was going as planned until the games tipped off in Tampa, Florida Friday.  The upsets could not stop coming-making for some really exciting basketball.  Byu made an early exit Thursday leaving the Mountain West with only one team in the tournament.  UNLV should represent well.  Every time you count the Rebels out, they come roaring back.  The longer they are in…the better it is for the entire Mountain West Conference.

March Madness

Go ahead and fill out that bracket.  March Madness has arrived and only the Lobo women’s basketball team will take part in the dance while the Lobo men are left out.  What a shame.  A team with 24 wins is left at home will other teams that didn’t even reach 20 wins will play in the tournament.  I know…someone will say the Mountain West is not as strong as some of the other conferences.  How does a conference get strong when they have to continually fight the politics of big time athletics.  The rich just get richer as they get their tournament and BCS football money to spend on recruits and facilities.  The other schools are left out.  People brag the big schools.  That’s like a 300 pound linebacker bragging about sticking a 140 pound high school player to the turf.  The big schools should win.  The playing field is so uneven it isn’t even funny.  I hope they don’t mess up the NCAA tournament.  The college football poofest called the BCS is already a good ole boys club of big schools.  Please do not mess up basketball.

This year the brackets have some of the mid majors paired against one another.  We can’t have that upset now can we?  It would be bad for the big boys.  I hope one day everything is truly decided on a basketball court or a football field.

unm women to ncaa…men to nit

The Lobo men’s basketball team found out Sunday that they will be playing at California in round one of the NIT Wednesday.  The game has a 9 p-m start and will be televised on ESPN.  The Lobos wanted to go to the NCAA tournament.  The team was visibly upset after finding out they were not in the NCAA tournament but, they also expressed appreciation for having an opportunity with the NIT.  Senior guard J.R. Giddens really seemed glad he could continue playing.  The Lobos need to make some noise in the NIT  and play and win with a tougher schedule if they want to become more of a brand name around the nation and in the eyes of the NCAA selection committee.  The Lobo women’s basketball team found out Monday that they will be hosting West Virginia in round one of the NCAA tournament.  West Virginia is a five seed.  The Lobos are a 12 seed.  The game has a 6:30 pm start Saturday.  When the annoucement was made, the Lobo women didn’t really show any expression.  They just said they are ready to play.  What can Dionne Marsh and Brandi Kimble do for an encore after taking the Mountain West to school in the conference tournament.

I just thought that you might want to know that Lobo fan favorite….Yeah right!!… Jimmy Dykes is part of the broadcast team for the game.   I am sure Lobo fans will make him feel welcomed.

Lobo Women are headed to the dance

Dionne Marsh and Brandi Kimble had a senior day away from the pit as they put the smackdown on San Diego State-helping the lobos win the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  The Lobos are hosting in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday. The Lobos won a tight 62 to 59 battle. They have now won five of the last six tournament titles.  In addition to playing well, the Lobos also credit their secret weapon…..the buffet for their success.  Dionne Marsh and Brandi Kimble made the all tournament team.  Marsh was named tournament MVP.  She had an ear to ear smile on her face as she picked up her trophy.  Marsh says the MVP award is for the whole team.  UNLV won the men’s championship over BYU.  Things got ugly after the game.  Some BYU band members and fans got into a scuffle with UNLV fans.  UNLV fans also rushed the court-upsetting some of the BYU fans.

The Mountain West Tournament will be in Las Vegas until at least 2010.  Some of the teams have already started grumbling about the homecourt advantage for UNLV.  UNLV also has the home cooked advantage.  Food is everywhere in this town and it’s time for me and sports reporter Doug Strickland to have some.  We have been working long days and nights since the tournament started.  We are tired and hungry and we will get down on a large plate of food right now.
